Commissions

Commissioning a portrait is a unique and exciting experience, and every commission is different. Whether you want to cherish a special moment in your loved one’s life, honour a significant figure, peer or colleague, capture your children in paint before they grow into grumpy teenagers or you just want to see what you might look like through the eyes of an artist, the process is always geared towards finding the individual character of my sitters.

The process can vary widely, depending on the availability of the subject, the scale of the project and the purpose of the painting, and so I always recommend getting in touch with me to discuss how that might work best for you.

Commissioned portraits start with a discussion so I can fully understand your needs and so you can understand what will be involved.

Once we have established a plan together we can schedule our first sitting, either in my studio, your home or a particular location, where I will usually make sketches in graphite or charcoal, create colour studies in paint and take photographs to establish compositional ideas and get to know my subject and their character. This might be enough for me to work from to create a final painting in the studio, or we may need further sittings for a more ambitious painting. This will always be decided in advance and I will always be flexible depending on your needs and availability.

Pricing for commissions is bespoke and depends on a number of factors, from the size of the painting, the number of elements or individuals in the painting, the level of finish that the painting requires and the scope of the project. Quotes are always provided upfront and there are never any surprises.

During the process, I keep clients updated and engaged in the process as much or as little as they would like.
